John Cook of Nebraska Volleyball narrows the horse naming contest to four finalists

Nebraska Volleyball narrowed the field to four finalists Tuesday in the competition to name their head coach’s new mount.

According to a social media post from the Nebraska Volleyball account, there were 10,000 name entries, with head coach John Cook narrowing the field to just four finalists – with a few honorable mentions. Cook selected the following names for the Nebraska faithful to vote on: Cash, Rev, Rip and Ship.

Cook received an extension earlier in June that included a $70,000 retention bonus to purchase a horse in rural Nebraska. The No. 415 nickname came from the contract wording, as Athletic Director Troy Dannen “could not specifically write into the contract” the purchase of a horse, according to Cook in the renewal statement.

Fans can now vote online at the Nebraska Volleyball page of Huskers.com. According to the social media post, the poll will remain open for another week as the winning name will be announced on the next episode of “Kicking Back with the Cooks.”

This writer’s opinion? Nebraska Volleyball may need a “ship” to help them get a national championship. That bid starts at the KFC Yum! Center vs. Kentucky.
