Tennis is great Ashleigh Barty gave a fitting tribute to former world number 1 Andy Murray after his retirement from Wimbledon last Thursday. The three-time Grand Slam champion played his last match at SW19 in the men’s doubles with Jamie Murray.

Barty returned to Wimbledon this fortnight and was in the Centre Court crowd to watch Murray’s farewell ceremony. In her press conference today, she expressed nothing but respect for the Scottish legend.

Andy is an amazing athlete. He’s been an inspiration and someone who’s fought so hard for equality. He’s always stood up for us and our tour. He’s an amazing person. I think it’s really special that at the tournament, he was able to celebrate and reminisce on his career. It’s not over yet I understand. I hope he’s able to bow out on his terms to the best of his ability.

Barty was a three-time Grand Slam singles champion who retired from playing in March 2022, becoming the first WTA player to retire as world No. 1 since Justine Henin in 2008. However, the Belgian returned from retirement in 2010.

Murray had a booking for the men’s singles at Wimbledon this year. However, he withdrew from his first round match on Tuesday after failing to recover from the back injury he sustained at the Queen’s Club. He therefore opted to play the men’s doubles with his brother Jamie Murray and mixed double action with Emma RaducanuHe lost in the first round of the men’s doubles, after which Raducanu withdrew from the mixed doubles match due to wrist pain.

Former world number 1 Andy Murray received a big offer to play at Wimbledon 2025. This came after Emma Raducanu withdrew from the mixed doubles competition this year.

Murray was supposed to play his last Wimbledon match on Saturday. However, Raducanu withdrew just hours before the match. Due to his back surgery, he did not play in the men’s singles this year. Instead, the two-time Wimbledon champion played in the men’s doubles with his brother Jamie Murray, but they lost in the first round.

Murray’s last match at Wimbledon may have already come and gone. But he got an offer to play mixed doubles with Ashleigh Bartythe 2021 Wimbledon champion next year.

After the loss in the men’s doubles, Murray gave an emotional speech. He said he wanted to keep playing, but his body couldn’t handle it anymore. His last singles event will be at the Olympic Games in Paris in July-August.
