Glasgow City Council is launching an ’emergency motion’ to celebrate Glasgow Warriors’ historic rugby victory

Glasgow City Council has launched an “emergency motion” to celebrate the historic victory of one of the city’s rugby teams.

The Scotland side lifted the United Rugby Championship trophy for the first time since 2015 after a hard-fought 21-16 win over the Bulls at a sold-out Loftus Versfeld, in South Africa, on Saturday.

After beating 2022 winners the Stormers and defending champions Munster to reach the grand final, the Warriors avoided a third defeat in the showpiece with a fantastic performance.

To celebrate the victory, the Warriors hosted an event Tuesday where fans could see the trophy in person and speak with their heroes as they completed a lap of honor.

Managing director, Alastair Kellock, told STV News that they now have a trophy to go into schools “that inspires the next generation”.

“We’ve got some guys who, rightly so, are going to be heroes and we’re prepared to make as much noise about that as we can.”

Now the celebrations continue with Lord Provost, Jacqueline McLaren, presenting the Glasgow Warriors with a civic reception in recognition of their success.

The Lord Provost said: “Naturally I am delighted with the Warriors’ victory and would like the city to mark their remarkable achievement in South Africa.

“It is an incredible result that Glasgow and Scotland can be proud of.”

The Lord Provost’s plans for a community celebration in honor of the rugby team were unveiled following an emergency motion, tabled by Councilor Chris Cunningham and seconded by Bailie Ann Jenkins, who praised the team at today’s council meeting.

In tabling the motion, the council said it considers the team’s victory “one of the greatest achievements not only in the history of Glasgow Warriors, but in the history of Scottish rugby”.

“Glasgow City Council is celebrating the achievement of the Glasgow Warriors who this weekend won the United Rugby Championship title for the first time since 2015.

“The Warriors defeated the Bulls 21-16 in Pretoria after coming back from a 13-0 deficit after 40 minutes.

It continued: “The Council agrees to ask the Lord Provost to host a civic reception to celebrate this historic achievement.

“The council acknowledges and expresses its sincere thanks to the Glasgow Warriors for their continued and invaluable contributions to the local community.

“The team’s commitment to various outreach programmes, youth development initiatives and charitable activities has had a significant impact on the lives of many Glasgow residents.

“Their dedication to fostering a sense of community, promoting healthy lifestyles and inspiring the next generation of rugby players cannot be underestimated.

“The council commends Glasgow Warriors for their efforts both on and off the field and looks forward to their continued success and ongoing commitment to inspiring the community.”
